How much damage are we liabile for after an apartment fire?

My wife and myself recently had a small apartment fire. The fire itself caused very little damage, some scorch marks on the ceiling that come right off. The sprinkler system and the firemen, on the other hand, caused quite a bit of damage: they tore a huge swath of carpeting up to help pool the water, sawed part of our sliding door frame out to make an outlet for the water off the balcony, knocked our toilet out to make a drain. a great deal of our things are ruined.
we dont have renters insurance, but we can eat the damages to our personal property. however, our landlord is telling us that they dont have any insurance either, and that were responsible for all damages done by the fire, the firemen, the sprinkler system, and other misc charges, such as the alarm system guy and elevator technician coming out.
im trying to get in touch with a tenant’s union here in seattle, but since theyre volunteer run organizations theyre slow to respond. does the landlord’s story sound strange
does the landlord’s story sound strange to anyone else? i did sign a regular contract when we moved in, saying we were responsible for damages to the apartment, but we simply dont have the money to pay for the (probably massive) bills that I know the landlord will try to saddle us with. Thanks in advance!
Will the insurance company go after the vandal/s of my property?

Recently my daughter caught my neighbor stabbing our above ground swimming pool, and our trampoline. When he seen her looking out the window, he jumped the fence, and ran through his back gate. The police state in the report that the wife, and husband had two different stories when they talked to them as to his whereabouts, and the neighbor was very nervous, and sweating… In short, the police didn’t believe him. Anyway, the insurance company gave us 1800 dollars, and wanted a copy of the police report so they can take the neighbor to court. Will they really do this, and what usually happens if, and when they do?
A detective has been asigned to the case, and we were advised by him to file our own charges, which we did that too.
To bostonianinmo, thanks for the comment. You mentioned that my neighbor was a kid. Well, he’s a 30 year old man. I know, I know… My son is a brown belt in Karate, and this guy staged a fight between my son, and his, without my knowledge, of course, because he thought Karate was “crap”. Well, my son beat his son, and ever since, this guy has harrassed us/my 11year old especially, and now we’ve sold our home, and buying a new one, just to get away from this psycho. We even built a 6 ft fence, but that made him worse. Now, we’re moving, because we’re literally afraid for the welfare of our son.
How can I get krazer phone replaced after dropping in water, no insurance, had it just over 1 month?

My son jumped in pool with his Krazer phone. It is with Cingular/At&t. Didn’t remember it for 20 minutes. We dried it out but it won’t turn on. He hasn’t used it now for about a month. We do NOT have insurance on it. I want to send it in for a new one. Will they be able to tell it was dropped in water? Can I call and tell them it won’t turn on? We just bought the phone and plan in May. What do I call and say? A friend of mine said she dropped hers in the water, didn’t have insurance, called and said it didn’t work and they sent her a new one. What can I do to get this phone replaced? I don’t want to purchase a new one. They are at least $250 on Ebay. Can I get insurance and then send it in later? What do i do?
